We would be gone far too long to allow the canines to have the run of the house. We also didn't want them tied up all that time outside in the oppressive heat.
The answer was to get an indoor dog pen from (where else?) Walmart.
Evy doesn't like being in it by herself and puts on her pitiful face. However, Buttons likes the pen and hops right in. Evy changes her attitude when Buttons is in the cage too. I guess its less a jail and more an air conditioned happy nappy-house.
